I May Forsake My Soul for Recommending This

Now, I believe in Jesus...but I also believe that He has a sense of humor.  So, He's probably getting a real big kick out of this whole "Rock Me Sexy Jesus" musical number from the movie Hamlet 2.  The soundtrack was released this week on iTunes.  I can't necessarily recommend it yet (because I usually wait to see the movie before I listen to the entire soundtrack).  But I can tell you that Rock Me Sexy Jesus is pretty damn funny.

Thanks SYTYCD...For Several Things...

I knew I liked So You Think You Can Dance when I saw Wade Robson use Roisin Murphy's "Ramalama Bang Bang" to choreograph the Zombie routine.  He even won an Emmy for it.

This show makes some great musical choices & they did it again last night.  Mark & Courtney danced a jazz routine to Mirah's "The Garden."  Go download the song - it's awesome.  And so were Mark & Courtney.  The routine isn't up on YouTube yet, but keep checking...it's worth it.

The Emmys Fuck Some Shit Up ... Again

... but here is a complete list anyways.

NOMINATIONS

Check out my thoughts on the nominees after the jump.

Mad Men - Ecstatic that is got all those nominations but much like the era of the show the WOMEN were shut out. Ya can't tell me that Peggy and Joan weren't as deserving as Don, Sterling, and Cooper.

YAY for Dexter!

Boston Legal
- This show blows. I blame it on the Alzheimer vote.

In Treatment got serious nominations but Tell Me You Love Me didn't. Jesus! Treatment is so over the top and Love is so subtly good. I mean, they should've at least gotten nominations for those digital balls they CGI-ed in.

Best Comedy = 2.5 Men YES ... Pushing Daisies NO - the most innovative Comedy is left off the list so the most mundane can be there, huh?

Entourage is not good anymore. Stop giving it nominations. The show needs to be "hugged out" till it suffocates.

Samantha Who? - Should be called Samantha Why?

Weeds - Granted it was not as good last season as 1 and 2 but it is still heads and shoulders above of the other comedies. The Office wasn't as great but it still got tons of nominations.

Tony Shalhoub
needs to take a page out of Katherine Heigl's book.

Flight of the Conchords deserved many more nominations. Hopefully they will at least perform at the Emmy telecast. My vote is for "Bowie in Space."

My favorite blondes - Kristin Chenoweth and Amy Poehler.

LOVE all the nominations for the Extras: The Extra Special Series Finale. A great capstone to a great series. Hopefully the wankers at the Emmy's will give it some gold instead of doing the easy thing and giving ALL the awards to Recount (which they will).

30 Rock still ROCKS!!!! Give them every Emmy especially one to Tim Conway in his turn as a racist, anti-semitic (calls the Writer's Room the "Jew" Room), and kinda gay former employee of NBC.

"I'm Fucking Matt Damon" is nominated for an Emmy. Maybe they do have a sense of humor.

West Side Story Revival Announced!

In The Heights won the Best Musical Tony and sold a million dollars in tickets the next day. The creator and star of the show, Lin Manuel Miranda, pointed out in interviews that his was the first musical on Broadway that was about Spanish people and written by Spanish people. And when something written by dark people and starring dark people makes money, "Latin" because the trendy thing to do.

So this was bound to happen - West Side Story will be back on Broadway in 2009.

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited. I love West Side Story, and it was the first thing I ever saw that had Puerto Ricans in it (even if half of them were white). And the great news is that Arthur Laurents is directing - and he did an incredible job reviving Gypsy this year. Laurents states in Playbill that his will be a darker take on the material, will be much more bilingual than the first, and will be more accurate to that time in New York history.

Here's where I bring out the old family joke about this show: How is it that Tony runs through the Puerto Rican section of New York screaming "Maria! Maria!" and only one girl answers?

Here are the details!

Oh, and PS - tell me the above isn't the greatest Playbill you've ever seen.

Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog is BRILLIANT.

Joss Whedon decided to write a short Internet only show about a wanna be super villain and his chiseled jawed nemesis (in three acts). Then gets Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion to star in it. And then, on top of all that heavenly geeky joy - it's a musical.

I'm weeping as we speak.

Act One is out today. Avoid the official site that's getting uber slammed, and watch it on iTunes or Joss's WhedonTube here.

Seriously, people. There are no words to describe how fabulous this is. Go now.

The news that the Wachowski Brothers' potential next project is a big screen adaption of Plastic Man starring Keanu Reeves makes this childhood Plastic Man fan ecstatic or should I say ELASTIC. HA!

BTW, the picture to the left is of the Plastic Man toy I played with throughout my childhood. You could make his head pop up and it amazed me. What can I say, I was a simple child.

The Cockroaches Will Just Have to Feed Themselves – Grissom is Gone

William Peterson is leaving CSI. This isn’t completely surprising news, Peterson has been very public about never intending to be on a show for this long. The fangirl in me is not pleased. I love Grissom. I kinda have a thing for him, actually. He just so… bowleggedly freakin’ adorable. I even liked the beard. (Sarah/Grissom romance reference!)

From EW: The events of last season's finale - specifically the death of Warrick -will push Grissom to the breaking point. "The easiest way to describe Grissom is 'in crisis,'" Petersen told [EW]. "As a man. As a scientist. As a teacher. As a middle-aged person who has been very successful at what he's done... [he] wonders, 'What's the point?'

Details about the departure, some of which are quite exciting and spoilerish, after the jump.

*Grissom will be around for 10 episodes, culminating in an arc that definitely has to do with Sarah (Jorja Fox, who’s in multiple episodes starting with the premier). He doesn’t die, in fact, he’ll be doing guest spots on the show. He’s still an Executive Producer. *Small plea to the Whatever that they do not get married and run away happily. I will vomit.

*Warrick (Gary Dourdan) will be in the first episode, but I’d guess dead body only. Maybe Nick thinking he sees him walking down a hallway, or Catherine needing masturbatory material.

*The new CSI is named Riley Adams, played by Lauren Lee Smith. Katie Sackoff (Starbuck from Battlestar) was up for this role, so Lauren better be freakin’ great so I don’t stay bitter.

*There will be a Grissom-type replacement, and it will be an established older leading man type. Names mentioned, but not probable, included Laurence Fishburne and John Malkovich. While I know that Liev Schrieber’s character can’t come back, I’m glad they’re not fishing in crappy waters. I vote Denzel. I mean, he probably wouldn’t do TV for any length of time… but doesn’t that make you shiver a bit? Denzel in a bulletproof vest making pithy comments over decapitated victims? OMGHEAVEN.

*The Lab Rats will be around more. Yay!

*The fucking terrible Miniature Killer will be back. Yuck. On the upside, those episodes are filmed so damn darkly, you can’t really see what’s happening anyway.

All in all, I’m very sad to see Grissom go. Peterson really made that character work from day one – and the silly little things like the awful hat (you know which one I’m talking about) and the way he would cock his head (just a tiny movement that would shout “I don’t understand your wacky emotion based actions, human person”) were brilliant.

Happy 20th Birthday Sub Pop

For those of you who don't know (perhaps living under a rock...especially during the 80's & 9o's?), Sub Pop is a Seattle-based record label that has brought us such can't-do-without acts as Mudhoney, the Vaselines, Iron & Wine, the Shins, Postal Service, Flight of the Conchords...oh yeah, and Nirvana.

This weekend, the label threw itself a fabulous birthday extravaganza by brining back many of its major and not so major bands for a weekend music fest at Marymoor Park.  (If Grannie Zaius hadn't been visiting this weekend, you know my ass would've been there).

A Quantum Queer Eyed Sequel

Variety reports that Scott Bakula will be in a new pilot for TNT called Men of a Certain Age, co-starring Andre Braugher (yay!) and Ray Romano (yay?). It's a drama about college friends hitting middle age poorly. I'd like to see this picked up, if only so that Bakula is forced to do many interviews where he has to answer the question "So seriously - Sam Beckett never made it home? Cause that's fucked up." Ed. Note - Yes, I'm STILL pissed about the Quantum Leap finale. I can hold a TV grudge. E. Note #2 - Yes, that is a picture of the March 1995 Playgirl magazine that I actually purchased because I might have a slight crush on Bakula. Do you remember he was the baby daddy on Murphy Brown??? Swoon.

Carson Kressley and those profitable New York ladies after the jump....

The Hollywood Reporter is, um.., reporting that Carson Kressley will be getting a talk show on Lifetime this fall. It's daily, and not about celebrities - he'll be focusing on real people. Prediction: the real people thing lasts for about two months.

Finally, you knew it was going to happen: Entertainment Weekly is reporting there has been a green light given to another Sex and The City movie. A $146 million domestic gross will do that. I have no idea what they are going to make Big do to Carrie this time, but if it involves a pregnancy, I'll track down Michael Patrick King (writer) and stab him with a stiletto.

What the hell is going on with Project Runway?

Short Answer: It premiers in ONE WEEK.
Long Answer: After the jump!

If you didn't realize the premier was just around the corner, you're not alone. There's been criticism that Bravo has "abandoned" Project Runway in anticipation of the show leaving for the Lifetime network next season. That certainly seems to be at least partially true - the current commercials are rare and nostalgic, reviewing past favorites and not showing a drop of footage from the upcoming shows.

Entertainment Weekly has some details here. In it, Heidi and Tim say all the right things about the show being as good now as last season, and that they are firmly involved with one season at a time. Reading between the lines, it seems that the business side of Runway (contracts, location, lawsuits, and money) are all still in flux as Harvey Weinstein continues to remind people who actually owns the show.

The biggest thing that bothers me is that we don't know who the contestants are - and the show is six days away!! I want a casting special on IMMEDIATELY.

Oh, and I really don't need to be plugging for these guys, since they are very very "in", but keep up on the show both here and at the fabulous Project Rungay. They are Queens with an obsession, and that obsession is all things and people associated with the show.

Late To The Party: I Finally Saw Mad Men...

...and it rules. The critics were right, The Golden Globes were right (it won Best Drama), and I will be promptly buying the first season DVD in anticipation of the second season premier this month. (It's in the shape of a Zippo! Hot.)

Jump on the bandwagon by going to the Mad Men Webpage and watch the pilot episode for free. AMC is smartly allowing this to lure us lollygaggers.

The show is about a mega advertising firm in the 60's, and it is accurate to the era - women and minorities are treated like crap and white men run the show. They also smoke and drink constantly. Our "hero" is Don Draper (Jon Hamm) who is brilliant, charming, and a slime ball... this is not a progressive character to say the least. He loves his job, and in order to keep it, juggles office politics and a complex personal life. Needless to say, that includes drama and exquisite suits.

It's shot beautifully, and the detail is astounding - you could actually watch this show just for the clothes and set pieces. But the acting and writing are just as sharp.

Passing Strange to be a film by Spike Lee

In what I think is fabulous news, the Tony Award winning musical Passing Strange is going to be made into a concert style film by Spike Lee. According to Entertainment Weekly, Lee will be filming two shows with audiences, and one without. It will most likely be seen on cable.

The show is a mostly biographical account of a musician who leaves middle class Los Angeles and goes to Europe in search of music, identity, and an understanding of race. It's not traditional Broadway by any means, and it goes from funk to rock to soul throughout. Having seen it and loved it, I hope that the film will extend the life of the show on Broadway - if you are in New York, go see it!

This week is a little light on new releases.  John Mayer has a live CD; that alongside Los Lonely Boys, My Chemical Romance, and Vanessa Hudgens are all the major albums being promoted this week.  Since I'm not exactly rushing out to buy any of those CDs (or should I say rushing to my iTunes to download them), I've decided to throw my weight behind Travis's new EP.  The title is J. Smith, and it's in anticipation for their upcoming album Ode to J. Smith (due out sometime?).

So, Jay-Z recently became the first hip-hop artist to headline Glastonbury Fest.  Apparently, this pissed off Noel Gallagher (you know, the opinionated Oasis-brother, not the one who thinks he's John Lennon re-incarnated).  He believes that the music fest doesn't need rappers, especially because they don't play guitars.  Here's Jay-Z's response, live from Glastonbury:

Olympic Moments: Rulon Gardner

Okay, so there's this guy named Alexander Karelin. He's a giant Russian wrestler who looks like he'd swallow your cat whole and then spit out a collar. His nickname is The General. And the General marched into the 2000 Olympics assuming he was winning the gold medal in Greco Roman Wrestling, because he had been undefeated since 1985. Fifteen years! And no one had scored a single point against him in six years - to put that in context, it's the equivalent of a baseball pitcher throwing a perfect game in every start for an entire season. That's how amazing The General was in his sport.

Then, out of a nowhere, came a Wyoming farm boy named Rulon. Olympic Moment? You bet your David & Goliath ass this is an Olympic Moment.

Bonus: His wife’s teary phone call to home after the match “He won. Can you believe that? He won. Call everybody.”

Oh - and then in 2004, he qualified for the Olympics again. When he won a bronze medal, he gave the traditional wrestling retirement speech. He sat on the mat, untied his shoes, and left them inside the circle. All while crying and receiving a standing ovation. If anyone can find that video and send it to me, I'd love to post it!

Documentary Tonight: Election Day on PBS

We like to think our elections are organized and well run and ethical. And then 2000 happens. Or 2004. Yadda yadda yadda - George Bush. See why elections are important?!?

Filmmaker Katy Chevigny followed 11 stories during the election of 2004, including:

A Republican committeeman trying to ensure Republicans aren't intimidated in urban Chicago (which is overwhelmingly Democratic)... A South Dakota activist trying to get his fellow Native Americans to vote on a reservation...A Muslim in Dearborn Michigan pushing fellow Muslims to vote...A Shaker Heights Ohio first time volunteer who struggles in chaos...An representative from Fair Election International observing a St. Louis polling station in an African American neighborhood (spoiler alert: She's pretty horrified at what she finds)... An ex-felon trying to exercise his just reinstated right to vote.

That's only 6 - you can read about the others at the Election Day Website Watch it on your PBS station tonight, or watch it free online for one week at pbs.org

Monkeys, you should make sure to catch this great documentary. And vote, for the love of the Constitution! Cause if you don't vote, then you shouldn't be allowed to watch fireworks on Friday.

Below is the trailer, please pay close attention to the poll worker who tells the observer "(Voting) isn't really a right, it's a privilege." The observer mildly replies "I'd call it a right." Sigh.
