An occasional look at the stunt casting, pandering plot lines, and horrifying continuity mistakes that piss off a TV lover.
Today's Installment: Lisa Loeb on Gossip Girl.
Now, I'm all for musical guests on scripted shows. The glory that was the Peach Pit After Dark will always live on in my heart (and hopefully in the updated 90210 - Joe E. Tata hasn't been on television since 2001. Bring back Nat!) And Ally McBeal perfected the superstar-for-no-apparent-plot-related-reason when Sting took the mike from Robert Downey, Jr. and projected his hotness all over my television.
BUT LISA LOEB ON GOSSIP GIRL PISSED ME OFF.
1. She sang "Stay (I missed you)". She sang "Stay (I missed you)". That song came out in 1994, and as awesome as it was, it's no "Every Breath You Take" to be resung at every opportunity for the next thirty years.
2. It's a song that was written for a movie about the slackers of Generation X. It's so far removed from the vibe of GG that I felt embarressed for Loeb. Seriously, I kept expecting someone to introduce the new student from St. Jude, Dennis Booker. (By the way, EW is reporting that Jonah Hill may be developing the movie version of 21 Jump Street. Bring back Richard Grieco! Cause Johnny Depp ain't getting near it.)
3. Lisa has a new album coming out on June 3rd, which, ostensibly, is why she was forced by her agent to go on the CW in the first place. Why didn't she sing her first single from that? Does she really think all the teenagers who watch Gossip Girl are going to run to buy her new album? No. They're on iTunes right now, downloading Stay (I missed you).
I like Lisa Loeb. I saw her at the freakin' Lilith Fair, for the love of cat shaped frames. But if you're going to whore yourself out on a scripted show, at least demand that you get to sing your current single. Cause when you rely on that one hit from fourteen years ago, it becomes a thing on TV that pisses me off.
